With only a half game lead in the Wild Card race, this weekend's Red Sox-Rangers series seems like a bad time to be without one of the team's best hitters.
Maybe they were worried about losing him for the Yankees series... or God knows what.
Most likely, he was run-down or had some nagging injury, and despite the importance of the Rangers series decided to get physically right. Hadn't heard of anything, but it is August.
I hope Bob Watson comes to his senses and reduces Porcello's suspension, because getting tossed in the second inning from a game he's up 3-0 is punishment enough.
Are you kidding? Porcello's suspension was a joke. To suspend them both five games is to suspend Youk for five games and Porcello for one. He misses one start. Big f'ing deal.
I understand the dynamics of suspending a starting pitcher, but a fine is enough for a pitcher plunking a batter -wasn't even near the head- in a beanball war. Porcello was clearly attempting to run away and simply used the nutcase's momentum to tackle him.
He had tried to hit VMart already, and Youk had been thrown at the day before. It was clearly intentional, and they had been warned. A one-game suspension is completely warranted. There's no "reducing" a five-game suspension for a starting pitcher short of throwing it out.
I used to take Youkilis' side in his squat with Joba, but based on his jawing to Santana after Johan dared to pitch him inside, I'm convinced he has a massive chip on his shoulder that entitles him to own the plate and take everything personally.
Did I call Miggy a nutcase? Even if he had charged the mound I wouldn't call him one.
Youkilis can be/is a Paul O'Neill-type brat, too, but he was thrown at intentionally (I saw the previous game) twice in two days. I don't see how charging the mound after that makes him a nutcase, or how yelling at Santana does either. A hothead? Sure. But that's not a nutcase, he's just a brat (which is why I don't particularly like him).

I had the same first thought you did - the Yankees series.
But at this point, beating the Rangers is more important to the team's chances of reaching the postseason.
That's why it must be that he's run down or hurt or something. Only thing that makes sense.

"Nutcase" because he was hit by a pitch the day before, his teammate was almost hit, and then he got nailed?
I'm not the biggest Youk fan but I don't think that type of reduction helps anything.
What about Miggy getting plunked both games?
